Last weekend was another baking hot one and I was outside once again, getting to know my Niihama surroundings. This time I took off in a southerly dirrection, taking a road that cut behind the Sumitomo hospital. I discovered a lot of fields and nearer the mountains the places in the photos above. There was a temple, some rocks piled on one another and a samurai who seemed to be pointing at graves. I havent a clue who or where these places are so my intention to put them into my blog as kind of a reference for anyone who wishes to travel to Niihama is somewhat flawed, but I can say that they were quite nice locations for short bike stops. The rock piles I often see around Japan. I checked wikipedia and apparently rock balancing is an art, a discipline and a hobby and there are four different styles of rock balancing. Freestyle looks the coolest I think. In Japan I assume it is all to do with zen, but if you look up Bill Dan on youtube, the guy is a balancing genius!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZItqAdaYPQM Up until very recently the Yoteimaru ferry boat has been docked up in Niihama port. It used to sail from Aomori prefecture to Hokkaido, but it has now been decommisioned and I think it is soon to be scrapped. Until that happens though, it is open as a tourist attraction and has a fun museum inside. You can wander around the decks. You can also meet the captain who used to serve aboard the ship. There is also a robotic captain working below, in the museum. His role wasn`t really explained in the exhibition. I don`t know if he can be used like an autopilot. If ever the captain is too tired or is feeling unwell, could the robotic captain step in to pilot the boat? Anyway It was fantastic fun. I especially enjoyed the wax models of the fake Aomori market and pulling the levers, and pressing the buttons. Thank you for your hard work Yoteimaru!!
本当お疲れ様☆羊蹄丸/(^^) In Niihama I have found a number of hidden temples and shrines scattered about. The above pictures are of a temple near the Niihama port. It features a nice entrance with a bridge and a separate building that has a 500 year old tree that you reach after a short walk up a flight of stairs. |
